PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

REPETITION

The repeating of a visual element of the design to relate the parts to one another.  It is one way to add Unity to a piece of artwork. By repeating an object within a composition your can create a sense of whole to the overall piece.

DEFINITION :

EXPLAINING REPETITION

Repetition, Rhythm and Pattern.

Repeating art elements in regular or cyclical fashion to create interest, movement, and/or harmony and unity. Rhythms can be random, regular, alternating, flowing, and progressive. Classes of pattern include mosaics, lattices, spirals, meanders, waves, symmetry and fractals, among others.

Motifs

Motifs can be thought of as units of pattern. In visual arts, they are bounded areas or volumes that contain designs or any desired combination of art elements: stamps, tiles, building blocks, modules, etc. Motifs can be copied and arranged in multiple instances to create a desired effect, such as repetition, rhythm and pattern.

Repetition

Repeated use of a shape, color, or other art element or design in a work can help unify different parts into a whole. The repetition might be limited to only an instance or two: not enough to create a pattern or rhythm, but enough to cause a visual echo and reinforce or accent certain aspects of the work.

Rhythm

When motifs or elements are repeated, alternated, or otherwise arranged, the intervals between them or how they overlap can create rhythm and a sense of movement. In visual rhythm, design motifs become the beats. Rhythms can be broadly categorized as random, regular, alternating, flowing, and progressive.

  • Random Rhythm - Groupings of similar motifs or elements that repeat with no regularity create a random rhythm. Pebble beaches, the fall of snow, fields of clover, herds of cattle, and traffic jams all demonstrate random rhythms. What may seem random at one scale, however, may exhibit purpose and order at another scale.

EXPLAINING REPETITION- This image represents repetition because the pennies are in a repetitive pattern and they are all the same shape and size. The imprint on some of the pennies are heads and some are tails but they still repeat throughout the image.

REPETITION

Repetition is one object or shape being repeated continuously throughout a canvas, area, etc.. Repetition can often create pattern or even rhythm. Repetition does't technically mean that they have to be exactly alike, but somewhat similar. An example to help learn repetition in art would be like identical twins. They're not completely identical in some aspect but for the most part you cannot tell them apart. To build on this idea, repetition doesn't just occur on paintings, drawings, etc., but in nature too such as if you were to head to South California, you'd see many similar palm trees aligned next you each other. That is also as well considered as repetition. There are many types and variety of repetition. Some examples would include patterns and rhythm in repetition. Since you can expand the definition of rhythm and patterns as well, there are many more ideas of repetition. Repetition can be regular or irregular, even or uneven.

EXPLAINING REPETITION- This picture it is a good representation of repetition, because it has the same colors and drawings. Some of the watermelons go through different directions but they all has the same size and colors.

REGULAR REPETITION

Regular repetition is simply just like the definition above explaining repetition, its just an object or shape that is repeated and most of the time creates a pattern, this is also referred to regular rhythm. For example Andy Warhol's piece, Campbell's Soup Cans. It is simply an object repeating consistently.
Regular repetition is accomplished by "repeating a visual element at regular intervals". Regular repetition is supposedly is relaxing and calming to look at, due to its repeated, neat pattern created.

IRREGULAR REPETITION

Irregular repetition are elements that are repeated but not how regular repetition is repeated. As the elements repeat, they can be a little different such as an increase or decrease in size. An example of irregular repetition would be Golconda by the artist Rene Magritte. In this piece of artwork there is a building scenery but all throughout the artwork, there is a standing man that is repeated throughout the piece. They are the same but their sizes differ.

1) Andy Warhol and Repetition-
Andy Warhol is very well known for his artwork that involve repetition, such as his piece, 100 Soup Cans, and Many Many Marilyns. The use of repetition in his artwork had a dual purpose, "it was meant to deflate the notion of fine art as well as elevate the mundane aesthetic experiences of our everyday lives."
'he mimicked the repetition and uniformity of advertising by carefully reproducing the same image across each individual canvas. "
2) Discussing repetition in nature-
There are many examples of repetition in nature like for example leaves. All leaves have a similar pattern to them. Some animals like zebras and giraffes have a repeated pattern on their fur. The moon phases are always in repetition every month. A honeycomb has the same hexagon shape in the whole structure.
3) Discussing repetition in architecture-
Repetition in architecture refers to an object or shape. It keeps repeating the patterns, but it change colors. All the pictures look almost the same but the color or texture make it look different but they look similar. The color and textures make it look interesting and it make it pop out. In a lot of bridges and buildings, their main base is constructed out of many repeated triangles to hold the architecture up. Another example would be windows on a building such as skyscrapers and company buildings. Their windows are all aligned next to each other, all the same, repeating from wall to wall.
4) How do artists use repetition to create visual interest -
Artist use repetition to create visual interest by repeating some aspects of the design throughout the entire piece. They also use different colors for each picture so they can look similar, by using different colors they make the pictures look interesting. They make different textures that make the picture pop out. For example they create designs by reaping na varying patterns over space, a good visual rhythm will lead the eye through a design.
EXPLAINING REPETITION- This picture it is a good example of repetition. The colors make the pictures look unique. Also the pictures look similar. This would be considered regular repetition since it is just repeated four times, making them exactly the same size and exact photo, but they are all in different colors due to filters.
EXPLAINING REPETITION- This picture it is a good example of repetition. This image of Marilyn Monroe was created by Andy Warhol. It has four pictures that are similar. It also has different colors that make the picture look colorful. And it make the texture pop out.
EXPLAINING REPETITION- This picture is a good representation of irregular repetition. Although there are other items in the foreground, the repetition is within the polaroids that are hung on the wall. The polaroids are repeated throughout where they hang on the string. All the polaroids are the same size, and all have the clothes pin holding them up, but each one of them is different because of the placement of the clothes spin and the image within the polaroid. Some of the polaroid are tilted but they are still all the same size if you were to put them next to each other, that's what makes them alike. They are not all aligned and exactly alike, like regular repetition is.
EXPLAINING REPETITION- This digital piece of art work is a great example of regular repetition. Unlike irregular repetition, the milkshakes on the piece are exactly alike, creating a pattern as they are repeated throughout the piece.. All of them are aligned the same way with the same colors too..
EXPLAINING REPETITION- This watercolor piece is a good example of irregular repetition. The element that is being repeated in this case are the cherries itself. Although they are not all the same size nor shape, they are somehow still very alike. As the cherries repeat throughout the picture plane, it creates not only irregular repetition but also a pattern. They have the same red cherry color.

EXPLAINING REPETITION- This image of chocolates is a good example of irregular repetition. The image has different chocolates but they are all the same color. They have repetitive pattern through the whole picture. Some of the chocolates have different shapes.
EXPLAINING REPETITION- This image taken is a great representation of repetition. This image has a leaf with lines all through it all the lines are repeated. The whole leaf is the same color throughout. The leaf has on line separating the horizontal lines.
